Curriculum

At Oakfield we aim to provide all our pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum, which meets the needs of individual pupils. We aim to ensure that all pupils make steady progress and achieve highly, being presented with a curriculum that reflects their experiences, backgrounds and abilities. We believe that children are taught and learn at all times during the school day and therefore we see the hidden curriculum as an integral part of a child’s overall education. A good education equips a child to be a lifelong learner and therefore opens the doors of opportunity.

Pre Prep

Developing skills and self-confidence

In the Foundation Stage and Year One classes, children attend school full time and are taught by the form teachers, specialist teachers, and assistants.

Pupils enjoy weekly sessions of Swimming, Physical Education, French, Music, plus Art and Crafts.

Educational approach

Much of the teaching is topic based and cross-curricular. It includes elementary science, geography, and history. Great emphasis is also given to literacy, numeracy and life skills.

Reading is taught primarily by phonics, but our educational approach varies to suit every child. There is a wide selection of reading schemes and children are encouraged to take books home on a regular basis. Maths is taught using practical examples, and early computer skills are also introduced.

Teachers pay particular attention to developing children’s social skills to ensure that they are ready to integrate more fully with older members of the school.

Upper School

The Upper School is a vibrant and friendly environment which nurtures the children’s confidence and self-esteem. All pupils experience a vast wealth of opportunities during the crucial learning ages of 6-11 years, whilst establishing excellent academic foundations.

In the Upper School, there are fantastic opportunities available to the children. Specialist teaching is introduced, more clubs are offered, musical groups are broadened and the children have the opportunity to take part in lots of inter-school sports competitions.
